Japanese tattoo & Homer Simpson

Today is my sis-in-law and my friends bday, so they each get a cake!  One was homer Simpson donut cake, and the other was a hand painted Japanese tattoo cake!  Both very different, but I love how they turned out! I love painting a cake, because I don't really get to draw anymore, and it was just like a painting on canvas, just slightly different! lol

Cat Cake!

This one actually didn't take as long as I thought it would. I am really surprised that  it didn't take longer - it was only about 4 hours.  The hardest part was carving the cake to look like a cat - Quite challenging!! Its like anatomy class all over again!!

Two more Cakes!!

Here are two more cakes that I did over the weekend - Both were done in less than five hours! Fastest time yet I think!  One was decorated completely in buttercream icing and the other was made from cupcakes!!  Pool Balls - I seen the idea online - its so quick and easy to accomplish!

Flowers, flowers flowers...

My mom's 50th birthday is today, and yesterday we had a surprise party for her - she had no idea!!!  My sister and I made a garden cake! which consisted of lots and lots of pretty flowers.
Making flowers takes a lot of time and patience, but creating them to look like the real thing is really so much fun!  We spanned the flower making over the whole week - making some everyday this week - this cake totalling around 16 hours of work! Check it out!

Fondant Gerbera Daisies and My first 'Wedding Cake'!!!

the time leading up to this seemed to go by fast - now its done! I used 5 batches of cake batter - 3 tier cake, plus single slab.. a total of about 12 hours of work, including baking... and making over 20 Gerbera daisies.   Next time I will give myself a little more time to make the flowers - that part took forever!!  BUT in the end I think it turned out great, and the bride was happy!

Guitar Cake!!

I am so happy with how this turned out! I started with a stencil that I drew on paper - then I carved out the shape, iced the cake, then covered it in Homemade fondant.. again!(love this stuff)  - After it was covered in white fondant - I hand-painted the colour on - I really tried to get the colour right!

The 7 Chakras Cake...

Had an interesting time with Royal icing last night... Its definitely different than buttercream. I had to pipe the outline figure twice, because it cracked on me the first time.

Canucks Jersey Cake!

The homemade fondant is really amazing!! Tastes great, and works really well.   I coloured the fondant blue, while it was in melted marshmallow format, and it was so much easier than mixing it in the fondant whole.

This cake turned out great! I am so happy with how it turned out!

NEW CAKE

So it turned out pretty great! The homemade fondant worked perfectly..(stuck to the table a little though)... BUT it tasted really good! People were actually eating the fondant...which NEVER usually happens!!

Also I used a new product from Wilton - a mold to create the shapes on the cake - it was pretty neat how well it worked.

Marshmallow Fondant!

Last night I made fondant! I cant believe how easy it was.  I got the recipe from: http://cakecentral.com/articles/105/mmf-how-to-decorate-cake-marshmallow-fondant The best part is that it tasted good to!

I haven't used it yet, but I am making a cake later tonight, so we'll see how it goes - i can't wait to try it!! I hope it works well, because I will be making fondant from now on if it does.

I went to Michaels last night and they have a whole bunch of new Wilton products out... it was amazing... I was like a kid in a candy store!!! I bought a few things - cant wait to try them all!!  Also the price of there ready-made fondant went up!!??  It was already too expensive... so the need for homemade fondant is now even greater!

NEW Cakes!

I just finished the Fondant & Gumpaste class at Michaels - so awesome, learned a lot!! The most important thing for fondant and gumpaste is shortening!(crisco)  I've been doing cakes for just over a year now, and I just only learned this...!??  It would have come in handy many times.

In the class I learned how to make some flowers and how to work with the fondant!  Can't wait to take the final class.  I've been staying fairly busy with cakes... but not too crazy!

Here are some of my recent cakes (including the one from the class, and some flowers)

Moist Chocolate Cake Recipe

I found this recipe online, it is so yummy! - Best chocolate cake I've ever tasted!
  • 1 3/4 cups Cake flour, plus more for pans
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 3/4 cups good cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk, shaken
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 extra-large eggs, at room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup freshly brewed hot coffee/instant (does not make the cake taste like coffee at all, Coffee just enhances the chocolate flavour)

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Prepare you cake pans.  I used  two 9in rounds, you can use rectangle pans or cupcake pans.. etc.
Sift the flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder, and salt into the bowl and mix until combined.
In another bowl, combine the buttermilk, oil, eggs, and vanilla. With the mixer on low speed, slowly add the wet ingredients to the dry. With mixer still on low, add the coffee and stir just to combine, scraping the bottom of the bowl with a rubber spatula. Pour the batter into the prepared pans and bake for 35 to 40 minutes, until a cake tester comes out clean.
Cool in the pans for 30 minutes, then turn them out onto a cooling rack and cool completely.

Two new cakes! (and a new recipe)

I finished two cakes yesterday, both very different! One is a Batman cake and the other was a Toopy and Binoo Cake! They were so much fun to make! I love getting all the different cake orders. So far every cake I have done has been completely different! I love getting to try different things!  Speaking of different things, I tried a new chocolate cake recipe... and it was so yummy! really moist and chocolatey! Here are the cakes!

Stay tuned for the next cake!
